The Santa Catalina area, made up of the city of Avalon, the town of Two Harbors, and miles of rugged wilderness, has fascinated tourists for the last century. The island has also continued to interest scientists, geologists and environmentalists who love to study flora and fauna life. Much effort has been made to conserve the land, as pioneer William Wrigley Jr. requested. About 88% of the land is in control of the Conservancy of Santa Catalina.

These efforts of keeping the land pure and undeveloped have helped to increase the animal and plant population. In fact, the island has about 20 endemic species that are not found anywhere else in the world. The island’s scientific marvels have had many travelers and professors comparing it to the Galapagos Islands. What can you expect to see while on your vacation?

There are many exotic plant and floral life on the island. Interestingly, some floral, like the wild apple for example, are only found on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, which is separated from the rest of the mainland and closer to Santa Catalina. This speaks volumes as to what a concentrated effort at nature-restoration can do.

One of the most peculiar features in the island is the development, and apparently, the evolution, of some animal and insect species. Because certain species have been restricted to this location and thus adapted, they have evolved into new life forms. Some snakes, birds, insects and small mammals have undergone genetic changes and these alterations have been studied by scientists and researchers.

Furthermore, some animals are defying nature by adapting to surroundings that would ordinarily kill them off, such as in the case of amphibians who ordinarily cannot tolerate heavy salt water. If you enjoy studying wildlife and taking in natural scenery, come visit the wonderful Santa Catalina Island!
