The city of Avalon on Catalina Island has just started its renovation and repair projects for its Waste Water Treatment Plant and sewer collection system. The budget for the said work is more than $5 million and is mostly funded by the Sewer System Improvement Fund’s annual sewer fees and the Avalon Community Improvement Agency’s bond proceeds.

Several tasks have already been completed including clarifier replacement; pump rebuilding; sewer collection system videotaping and analysis; GIS system development; formulation of cleaning, replacement and rehabilitation master plan; improvement projects; and bidding and awarding of two projects for the collection system’s rehabilitation or replacement.

The next steps will include new centrifuge installation at the WWTP; designing of a SCADA system; slip lining of collection system areas by Sancon Inc.; and the implementation of Colich and Son’s Sewer Main Reconstruction Projects.

The tasks for the rehabilitation and reconstruction project have been divided and have already started in late November. The contractors are expected to complete the project before the visitor season begins next year.

While work is on-going, fresh and salt water will be turned off and parking restrictions will be implemented on certain areas on specific hours of the day. Residents will be informed beforehand regarding for their preparation.

Through the project, the city expects to solve majority of the problems in its sewer collection system and continuously find ways to completely solve them.
