Santa Catalina Island offers a wide range of activities catering to nearly every taste. An example of this is the upcoming Wild Side Art Show taking place on June 11th. The annual event, one of several focusing on the cultural attributes of Catalina Island, will take place on Avalon at the Catalina Country Club from 2pm to 5pm.
The Wild Side Art Show will feature art work on display from nine nationally known plein air painters (from the French expression "en plein air" meaning "in the open air") displaying works based on interpretations of Catalina's landscape with special focus on the town of Avalon. Many of these works will be available for sale to those who attend the event.
The art show is one of several such events sponsored by the Catalina Island Conservancy. The goal of these events is to highlight the natural and historic beauty of Avalon and other island locations. The island has provided inspiration for artists and their artwork for years. Many of these artists have gone on to national acclaim with several returning to such events to display and sell their artwork. Some of these artists have returned to the island to seek inspiration, with some remaining in the area.
Proceeds from the event will go to establish a collection of plein air artwork to function as a permanent display emphasizing the history and natural beauty of the area. The display will be featured at the Catalina Island Conservancy. Ticket information for the Wild Side Art Show is available on the Conservancy's website. The Catalina Island Conservancy works towards preserving the island's wildlife, including habitats necessary to sustain island plant and animal life.
