When you are in a setting as beautiful as Santa Catalina, then why not take your time and soak in the scenery? Now is as great a time as any to start walking and getting some clean air and moderate-level exercise. In fact, most vacationers and residents prefer to walk around the island, considering that traffic is heavy (and permit-based).

If you can’t walk for long periods of time then consider a short walk. The town of Avalon is small and offers many architecturally ingenious houses. Some houses still remain on the 20-foot-wide lot created by George Shatto in the 19th century. You will find most of these homes around the Pleasure Pier. Another quick walk is around the Botanical Gardens, which is also near the golf course and Catalina Stable. Along the way you can see many flora and cactus.

The Whittley Walk takes from Crescent and the shoreline to East Whittley. Along the way, you see a Christian Science Church and the Trout House. The Barlow House is another site of interest, as it is an historical house from the early 20th century. The Casino on Descanso Beach is a must-see location. This is a “flat” walk that will take you all through Via Casino Way, allowing you to view the Tuna Club and the Yacht Club. Other old homes and sites worth walking to include the Zane Grey Home, the Pebbly Beach and Mt. Ada Walk.

If you want to walk a longer distance then consider the walk from Jail Road to the Indian Trail to Stage Road. This walking tour offers a nice elevated vantage point along with steep slopes for you adventurers. The Hermit Gulch Trail that sees you walk through Canyon Road and to Divide Road also provides a challenging hike.

There is plenty to do in Avalon and Catalina Island. Walk, don’t run—enjoy the beauty!
