Transportation in Santa Catalina is different than life in the mainland. Whereas Los Angeles is flooded with traffic, Santa Catalina has very light traffic in comparison. The difference is that the roads here are much smaller. Therefore, drivers must have a permit for their cars, and not many permits are issued a year. Drivers cannot “drive” to this island.
Most travelers prefer to get around by walking. Streets and sidewalks both tend to be narrow. When you walk these streets, you will be treated to clear blue water views of the ocean. The main street of Crescent Avenue is reserved for foot traffic. Why, even dogs on leashes are not allowed in this area. This is coincidentally where the highest contraction of restaurants, shops and hotels are situated. This part of town is only reserved for walking—no biking.
In other parts of Avalon, bicycles are allowed. You can rent bikes at Brown Bikes on Pebbly Beach, including stroller attachments, baby seats and wheelchairs. You can also bring your own bike, though you should know, a permit is required. Other methods of transportation include taxi cabs (the Catalina Cab Company), from one stand on Crescent Avenue all the way to the Metropolis Marketplace.
There are car rentals available (from Catalina Auto and Bike Rentals) but you must stay within the city. Within the city limits are the Botanical Gardens and Pebbly Beach. Other rental companies worth noting include Island Rentals on Pebbly Beach and Cartopia Car Rentals.
When you’re heading out to Two Harbors, from Avalon, the best way to travel is by ship. You can take the Shoreliner Cruise from Avalon to the Two Harbors area, and see the mountains and free wild life. The ship route also passes many coves. Transportation in Catalina is certainly not traditional—but it’s far more enjoyable, given the scenery!
