The Santa Catalina Casino Point is located on Descanso Beach. You can approach the casino on foot by way of Via Casino Way and past the Tuna Club and Yacht Club. You will immediately be taken by the architectural beauty of the site, (it resembles a cross between a hotel and a mosque) not to mention its marine surroundings.
Interestingly, the casino looks and feels the same way as it did in the 1920s. It is a huge building capable of holding the entire population of the island. In fact, it is considered a civil defense shelter. The casino is so well known it has become a part of the island’s culture. Within the Casino is a museum, an art gallery, a ballroom and a theater. The movie theater still has the original Page organ installed back in the 1920s for “talkie” pictures. The theater also boasts art-deco murals and postmodern décor. In addition to movies, the theater has also hosted USO shows, stage productions and community activities. There are still features played inside the legendary theater.
The museum contains ancient Indian artifacts along with 19th century photographs. There are also slide shows with commentary playing throughout the year. The art gallery keeps up to date and offers new exhibits for every season. The gallery also holds contests for new artists that are judged by award-winning artists. Lastly, there’s the ballroom, which holds a large dancing area measuring 20,000 square feet. The ballroom was recently redecorated and has new drapes, a new stage and a new kitchen. It is ideal for hosting weddings and other large celebrations. It is considered the world’s largest circular ballroom.
Don’t forget about the casino itself! There is plenty of gambling fun and drinks to enjoy. You can find the casino midway between the St. Catherine Hotel and Avalon.
