Avalon is Catalina’s largest town. This town dates back to the year 1987. Avalon was made possible by notable individuals like George Shatto, the Banning Family and William Wrigley Jr. who built the Thompson Reservoir. Today, the town continues to be a popular tourist spot, thanks to efforts in the 20th century to expand economy. Today, Avalon is known not only for its tourist-friendly views and natural beauty, but also for its warm community.
The population (about 2,500) grows slowly, keeping community interaction on a personal level. Crime is rare in this part of town, and even when tragedy strikes, it is an event that affects the entire community. It’s not surprising at all to learn that tourists are so drawn to the island that they want to live here permanently. What is surprising is actually finding a house for sale! Properties here go fast and the number of available houses is always low.
Of course, paradise living is not for everyone. Even in modern Avalon, people still travel by barge to get to the mainland. The mainland is where all of your favorite stores and services are hosted. Naturally, whenever inclement weather occurs, the barge doesn’t sail. This can create a bit of a competition when it comes to grocery shopping.
Nevertheless, Avalon remains a tourist-friendly area, with several hotels, homes, and restaurants popping up on a regular basis. The parking situation is also problematic on occasion. Roads are so small that the local community has decided that drivers need permits for their cars, and only a maximum number of permits can be given out. Then again, if you’re intent on driving through this beautiful island, then something’s wrong with you! This is an area that is best experienced by walking and boating. If you want faster travel then check out bike rentals, taxis and carts. Come experience a modern day paradise in Avalon!
